what the film does
two brothers in the chicago fire department: stephen mccaffrey (russell), the veteran who takes risks, and brian (baldwin), the rookie who keeps failing. their father died in a fire when they were children, and the opening sequence of that death is one of the most effective in any 1990s blockbuster. a serial arsonist is setting fires across the city, and the investigation pulls in an arson detective (de niro) and a hospitalized pyromaniac (sutherland) who explains fire as if it were a living thing.
the screenplay is by gregory widen, who wrote the highlander. the score is by hans zimmer. the cinematographer is mikael salomon, who shot the abyss. the fire sequences were created with practical effects on full-scale sets, using a modified fuel mixture that produced controllable flames. several of the interior fire shots are real fire on real sets with actors present.
why this one
the fire. salomon’s photography treats fire as a character with moods and intentions. the scene where sutherland’s character explains a backdraft, stroking a lighter and describing how oxygen starvation turns a room into a bomb, is the thesis statement of the film: fire is not chaos, it is physics, and understanding it is the only power the firefighters have.
russell plays both stephen and, in flashbacks, their father. the dual casting is not a gimmick. it gives the father-son ghost story a physical presence that makeup and cutting alone could not achieve. the film grossed $152 million worldwide on a $40 million budget and was nominated for three academy awards, winning for best sound effects editing.
the film’s reputation has shifted. in 1991 it was seen as a competent blockbuster. now it is watched for the practical fire work, which has largely disappeared from contemporary cinema, and for the cast, which is a time capsule of late-80s early-90s star power.
