what the film does
jack morrison (phoenix) enters a burning grain elevator to rescue a trapped victim. the floor collapses, and he falls into the burning structure. as captain kennedy (travolta) coordinates the rescue from outside, jack lies injured and remembers his life: his first day at the firehouse, meeting his wife (jacinda barrett), the births of his children, the deaths of colleagues, and the slow accumulation of knowledge that turns a rookie into a man who runs toward fire.
the screenplay is by lewis colick (october sky, the tenth kingdom). jay russell directed. the fire sequences were shot in a decommissioned baltimore grain elevator with practical effects. the score is by william ross.
why this one
phoenix. this is between signs and walk the line, and he plays jack as a man who is not heroic by nature but who has chosen a job that demands heroism. the performance is physical: the way he moves inside the burning building, the way he breathes, the way his eyes change between the flashbacks and the present. jack is not a character who makes speeches about duty. he is a man who went to work one morning and did not come home.
the film is a tribute to firefighters, and it knows that the tribute risks sentimentality. it manages the risk by keeping the structure honest: the flashbacks are not highlights, they are ordinary days, and the ordinary days are what the fire takes. the film does not kill jack with a grand gesture. the fire is not choreographed. the floor gives way because floors give way.
the film grossed $101 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. it is a companion piece to backdraft: where backdraft is about fire as spectacle, ladder 49 is about fire as work.
